Guest Post #3 - THE KING REGARDS

The King Regards are a deejaying duo comprised of Reggie Williams and Ben Richardson. With over 20 years of experience between them, The King Regards have established themselves as some of Cardiff's best deejays. Their sets consist of anything from "the heaviest basslines known to mankind, the darkest tribal beats, the freshest disco sound through to the funky tech of today". Residents at the legendary C-Y-N-T, they have supported some of the biggest names in the game such as: Drop the Lime, Borgore, Raffertie, Tom Staar, Foamo, Krywolf, L-VIS 1990, Fake Blood, Congorock, Subfocus, Annie Mac, Tom maddicot and Flux pavillion to name but a few. The duo have also turned their heads to production where they too have achieved a lot of regonition with plays on Radio1, Skint Record podcasts and trachsearch.blog as well as, gaining the attention of the founder of new label - Untuk-tee Records. And that was just 2010! With more productions, remixes and high profile gigs in the pipeline, 2011 is already off to a spectacular start. The King Regards are definitely an act to watch out for.

Below is a recent CYNT podcast mix.

VALENTINES DAY FIX

So I've been doing a little bit of research into the history of Valentines Day in an attempt to make myself look moderately intellectual. Sadly, wikipedia has failed me and it appears that Valentines Day has a pretty weak rooting in history...like most things, it's suffered from a bad game of commercial/corporate Chinese Whispers lead by the "man". This blog however, suffers no such bias - so here is a few love making tunes WTD? style.

Cassie ft. Diddy - Must Be Love (Jacques Greene Remix)

Terri Walker & T. Williams - Heartbeat (Mosca Remix)

Guest Post #2 - CHLOE SWABY

Installment number 2...bit of an unusual post for WTD? but we're about all types of music.

Chloe Swaby is an acoustic pop singer hailing from just outside London. Her sound is a fusion of catchy melodies with lyrics that you can relate to. With influences such as Adele and James Morrison Chloe's music is grounded in experience and a reflection upon the world she lives in. She writes from the heart and her lyrics convey her feelings on life and love.

Chloe released her debut single 'Racing Car' in November. (iTunes purchase)

Here are a few more tunes:

Escape by chloeswaby

Stay Mine by chloeswaby

Since releasing her single Chloe has played gigs at the top London nightclub Mahiki in Mayfair, a charity gig for Oxfam at 10FeetTall in Cardiff and a RAG week event at Cardiff Arts Institute.

Here's another video this time with special guest (myself) on the beatbox.

WHITELABEL.NET

Okay, so I was shown this website a couple days ago and have been pretty impressed with it. Whitelabel.net is run by Serato and is essentially a promotional website. It allows you to download some of newest releases free of charge to be played through Serato software only. The track will appear in your iTunes as 32kbps but when played through Serato (with hardware plugged in) is at 320. Really clever way of ensuring that the tracks are used 'for promotional purposes only'.

Here is a few songs I found on the site:

Kid Sister and Gucci Mane - Gucci Rag

Canblaster - Clockworks

Drop the Lime - Sex Sax

Cali Swag District - Kick Back

These are just a few, but there are literally thousands on the site. Remember though, the songs will only work in decent quality through Serato software.

NUFF RUFF RIDDIM

According to the official website: "Rastamouse is a show with positivity and fun at its heart. Rastamouse, together with Scratch and Zoomer, make up the Easy Crew: a crime-fighting, mystery-solving, special agent, reggae band, who hang out at Nuff Song Studio. With Rastamouse as their clear (but unassuming) leader they are often called upon by the President, via the radio, to help solve mysteries, catch teefin' criminals, and generally make life better for the inhabitants of Mouseland."

I wish I was actually making this up but Rastamouse is broadcast daily on CBeebies, and it is absolutely amazing! It's been receiving mad attention even Mistajam mixed the Rastamouse theme tune into Girl Unit 'Wut' on Radio1. All the episodes are available on BBC iPlayer. They're only 12 minutes long...why not?

I mean just look at it...

Of course, it has created quite a stir on social networking sites with hundreds of bootleg remixes and mashups. Here is one of the more palatable ones:

Rastamouse (Star one remix) by StarOneUK

An official soundtrack is due to be released with single 'Ice Popp' already out on iTunes (purchase)

All episodes available here.

Guest Post #1 - EXOTICA

The first installment of what will hopefully be many guest posts on 'WTD?'. Basically what we'll do is have a little bit of info, a mix (if possible) and then a playlist consisting of a 10 song journey into the mind of that artist. A minimix without the mix.

First up: close friend and DJ, Exotica (Oli Ashley)

Oli is currently attending Point Blank music college in London as well as working as a studio assistant and audio engineer at Rinse FM and interning at label, Nightslugs. His passion for music is unequivocal, I honestly know no one who is as involved in what they do as he is. I have had the pleasure of deejaying with him on several occasions and have seen him go from strength to strength. Oli has recently gained a residency at Mo*vida in London which although may not cater to his more underground preferences I'm sure will be an invaluable experience. More excitingly, there is the prospect of him hosting a show on Rinse FM, which I'm sure is only a matter of time.

Below is a recent mix

JUKE

Although Juke is a well established music genre in Chicago and other parts of the US it is relatively new to the UK bass music scene. Sometimes known as Ghetto Bass, Juke is heavily influenced by hip hop beats and usually falls between 150-160bpm.

Several artists in the UK have latched on to the genre and it is becoming more of a feature on the underground music scene. Labels such as Planet Mu have played a large part in pushing the genre this side of the Atlantic. As well as, Addison Groove's recently released 'Footcrab' which gained quite a lot of media attention.

Below are several links available for download

Various Artists - Overkill (.zip download)

Crime Mob - Knuck if You Buck
(download)

Lemonade - Remain in Jah (Chrissy Murderbot Remix)
(download)

Addison Groove - Footcrab (download)

Alongside the music, Juke has now developed into quite a big dance culture with Footwork, as its known, becoming more popular.

I'm not going to lie, the first time I heard Juke I didn't really get it. It just seemed way too fast. It was only until I saw DJ Spinn live that it really started to make sense. His mixing was immaculate and he was even scratching at 160. I think 'ghetto bass' sums it up quite nicely, it has all the attitude of a hip-hop track combined with the intensity you'd more readily associate with Baile or D'n'B.

ROSKA ROSKA ROSKA

I was at the Rinse FWD>> night @ Concorde 2 in Brighton last weekend. Plastician, D Double E and Joker all played great sets but Roska along side MC/vocalist Jamie George definitely stood out the most.

Roska is a producer/dj based out of London who makes some of the best Funky tunes out right now. He also runs label Roska Kicks & Snares and hosts a radio show on Rinse FM.

Below are two video links. I'm posting them up more for the novelty of the videos themselves but the tunes are both pretty sick.

Here's a free download: Rinse Presents Roska (.zip donwload 256kbps)

1. Tomorrow is Today
2. Love 2 Nite (ft. Jamie George)
3. I Need love (ft. Anesha)
4. Squark
4. Energy (ft. Nikki)
5. Hey Cutie
6. Time Stamp
7. Messages
8. Burn in Flames
9. Wonderful Day
(ft. Jamie George)

Lastly, Roska has recently released the 'Toddska E.P' a collaboration project with Toddla T (iTunes purchase)

Sinden Presents Free Gucci II

Last year Diplo was in charge of rounding up several artists to remix Gucci Mane's album. This year Sinden headed up an english or 'Burrrtish' team to do the same. As expected Sinden's choice in artist is second to none. The mixtape is available to download free in full 320kbps

What's the Diff?

So I've toyed with the idea of creating a music blog for a while and I've finally decided that its time.

'What's the Diff?' is a radio show on XpressRadio.co.uk every Friday from 7-9 hosted by myself and close friend Nicky (Beatotter). But more so than that, it is a concept. Based in Cardiff, 'Whats the diff?' sets about discovering musical talent and finding out exactly what it is Cardiff stands for. The D'n'B and Dubstep scenes have been well established in Cardiff for several years but there is an increased emergence of alternative genres and styles that I hope will soon become more common place.

I hope that this blog will be able to play some part in pushing new music and if nothing else at least be an enjoyable read/listen for people as passionate about music as me.

To get things started off below is a house/funky mixtape I made last week that encapsulates some of my musical tastes at the moment.
